People are attracted to many things inherent in the landscape as well as the makeup of the residents, and more folks are drawn to the easier pace and lifestyle the island supports. Communities on Whidbey each have their own unique personality. Nature abounds, with many natural environments hosting eagles, herons, deer, and then the rich sealife of Puget Sound. Orca whales play in Saratoga Pass, and in the late summer you can stand on the beach and cast for salmon. From open ocean to protected bays and inlets, you can enjoy fishing, clam digging, and crabbing. Physical enthusiasts explore the island by bike, kayak, boat, windsurfing and diving. You can freshwater fish for trout at one of several lakes. Watch for deer along the roadsides, especially during dawn and dusk. Slowing down is a good preventive measure to keep from colliding with them.
